Research Projects

The NFC Research Lab Hagenberg is currently involved in two major research projects:

  • HiSpeed-RF (High-Speed RF Reader for NFC Applications and Services):
The research project "HiSpeed-RF" is funded within the framework "Research Studios Austria" of the Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth. The aim of research is the development of an NFC reader, which is able to communicate with the 8x bit rate compared to state-of-the-art readers. A special focus will be the compatibility and interoperability with NFC smartcards. The new high speed NFC reader shall show the possibilities of the higher bit rates for applications and services. Additionally it's planned to establish a competence center in Hagenberg to support small and medium-sized enterprises with the development and verification of NFC applications and services.

  • High Speed RFID (Evaluation of NFC/RFID readers with very high data rates):
The project "High Speed RFID" is a research project within the EU programme "Regionale Wettbewerbsfähigkeit OÖ 2007–2013 (Regio 13)" funded by the European regional development fund (ERDF) and the Province of Upper Austria (Land Oberösterreich). This project aims at building a universal test platform for contactless chip card systems. The test platform will allow the evaluation of protocols for the interaction of next-generation RFID and NFC reader devices and the hardware-driven simulation of JavaCard applications.

Previous Projects

  • VHD (Very High Datarates):
"VHD" is a research project, funded by country of Austria withing the FIT-IT program, with focus on the high speed air interface and IC architecture for contactless smartcards and Near Field Communication (NFC).

  • NEXT (Near field enabled EXperience for Transportation):
The "NEXT" project, funded by the Province of Upper Austria (Land OÖ) within the general programme, focuses on the field of electronic transportation expenses in public transport based on NFC.

  • 4EMOBILITY (Energy-efficient Economic and Ecological Mobility):
The project "4EMOBILITY" is a research project within the EU programme "Regionale Wettbewerbsfähigkeit OÖ 2007–2013 (Regio 13)" funded by the European regional development fund (ERDF) and the Province of Upper Austria (Land Oberösterreich).
